Antique Samuel Arlent Edwards Signed Original Colored Mezzotint Portrait of Mrs. Lowndes-Stone

$480

  • Stunning rare original signed print portrait of Mrs. Lowndes-Stone (after original painting by Thomas Gainsborough (1758-1837)).
Samuel Arlent Edwards was born in 1862 in Somerset, England, and studied art and architecture at the Kensington Museum Art School from 1877 to 1881. A Master engraver, he is best known for his single-print mezzotint engravings in color. Edwards’s mezzotints range from inspired by well-known European paintings by Botticelli, Boucher, Gainsborough, and Da Vinci, to British and American portraits. He was meticulous about his work, and often inscribed “Engraved and printed in color at one printing without retouching” on each impression. An engraving by his hand was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1887. Edwards moved to the U.S. in 1890, and began working as a book illustrator in New York under the name of S. Arlent Edwards. His works became highly collectable in light of Edward’s high skill level and the imitated of printed editions produced.
