1950s Mid-Century Modern West German Black Basalt Small Pitcher by Greil
$235
- Striking example of early post-war German modernism, this rare small “Mattschwarz” (matte black) basalt pitcher features an elegant, architectural silhouette. Produced in the early 1950s, the vessel is attributed to the Greil studio—a name closely associated with the early modernist output of Bernhard Greulich (co-founder of Scheurich & Greulich).
The pitcher is crafted from unglazed stoneware with a velvety, charcoal-black finish. Its design showcases a sophisticated interplay of textures, featuring a smooth, tapered neck that transitions into a precision-ribbed, engine-turned body. The dramatic, high-sweeping handle and elongated “beaked” spout are hallmarks of the “New Objectivity” movement, making this a highly sculptural piece for a collector of West German art pottery or minimalist Mid-Century design. - Period: 1950’s
